Cambodia: Literacy going up
The adult literacy rate in Cambodia has increased, as the final results of the 2008 general population census has revealed. Although the number of literate 7-year-olds and older has increased from 62,8% (2005) to 78,35% (2008), it still remains the lowest in southeast Asia after Laos. Also, the number of children attending school has increased.
The results also show that the population of Cambodia has increased from 11,4m people to more than 13,4m in 2008, the estimated infant mortality rates shows a moderate decrease from 66 to 60 per 1'000 births during 2005 and 2008.

Nach dreijährigen Verhandlungen wurde am 3. Dezember in Oslo ein neuer Rüstungskontrollvertrag über das weitgehende Verbot von Streubomben besiegelt. Mit der Unterzeichnung durch über 100 Staaten,darunter auch die Schweiz, ist man so einen grossen Schritt weitergekommen auf dem Weg zu einem weltweiten, vollständigen Verbot von Streubomben. Am Ziel ist man deswegen aber noch längst nicht.
