For tourists, Pulau Langkawi is a small island paradise in the north of Malaysia. Far away from paradisiacal conditions, however, there are countless cats and dogs living on the island - some of them feral, often neglected, sometimes injured by accidents or unpleasant encounters.
It is our goal to cover a wide range of charity projects and topics. Despite the serious grievances that may exist elsewhere, we believe that animals too deserve a dignified life. We discovered the Langkawi Animal Shelter and Sanctuary (LASSie) in 2006 during a trip - and immediately fell in love with all the lovely creatures (the "furry friends") there.
For tourists, Pulau Langkawi is a small island paradise in northern Malaysia. Far away from paradisiacal conditions, however, there are countless cats and dogs living on the island - some wild, some neglected, sometimes injured by accidents or unpleasant encounters. In Muslim Malaysia especially dogs have a hard time - because they are considered impure in Islam. LASShe takes care of these animals by taking them in, sterilizing them in the clinic, operating on them, caring for them, feeding them and placing them in her own shelter, unless the animals can be given up for adoption.
LASSie was founded in 1997 by the animal-loving Australian Narelle McMurtrie, whose second passion is exceptional hospitality. With LASSie, she combines both, as the Bonton Resort on Langkawi, which she opened in 1994, co-finances the animal shelter and the clinic. The resort was massively expanded in the summer of 2008 to provide a more stable financing for LASSie.
